How to get started on the Thematic research platform
A quick guide on how to use the Thematic research platform.
The Thematic research platform is built specifically for investment professionals to efficiently and confidently develop a point of view on a company or investment theme.
By combining generative AI, hundreds of thousands of company documents, and years of financial data, Thematic helps investment professionals quickly develop a point of view on investment decisions and also create new marketable investment products.
Here's a quick primer on how to get started. From the Start page, there are currently 3 ways to kick off your research:
- Research a topic: a broad, "tops down" approach
- Stock screener: a natural language input to find all companies that meet quantitative criteria
- Find companies: deep dive into a single company, including all financial metrics, news, and the ability to ask research across all public documents
Research a topic
The Thematic research platform is is the fastest, easiest way to get started on your equity research. The Research a topic function is a broad, qualitative, tops down search that helps you find companies that match a particular theme or topic.
To power this, our AI interprets what you're looking for an runs a semantic search across all company documents and news articles. At current count, there are 212,980 documents in our system.
Here are a few examples of what Thematic users searched for:
- What are the ticker symbols of all the public companies involved in quantum computing?
- I'm interested in companies that cater to employees going back to work in offices 3 to 4 days per week. Representative company is Uber.
- Companies owned by people of color and women as well as companies whose practices or business relationships demonstrate diversity and racial justice.
- What are the largest north american EV producers?
You can add quantitative filters to refine your search. Click on Add filter, choose a metric, and the parameters you want to use. You can also dictate these filters directly into the search field in natural language.
After submitting your search prompt, the Thematic research platform will produce a several outputs:
- An overall summary of your search query results
- Subcategories to help you go deeper
- A list of companies that match your search - these are listed in order of match strength, unless another sort criteria is specified (such as by market cap)
- If filters were added to the query, the filters used will be shown
With the results, there are several steps you take take next:
- Refine your search and re-run it
- Go deeper by exploring the subcategories - each subcategory will run a more specific search
- Research individual companies - see the Find companies section below for more details on what you can do at an individual company level
- Add selected companies to a portfolio, where you can track aggregate performance, develop an investment strategy, and backtest and benchmark that strategy
- Share with others - it's free!
Start by researching any investment topic
Stock screener
The Stock screener function is very similar to Research a topic, but with a quantitiative tilt. If you're looking for companies that match particular criteria based on metrics, you can add or type the metrics in natural language and we'll use AI to interpret what you're looking for.
Here are some examples from Thematic users:
- Market cap less than $2.2b, 1 year revenue growth less than 5%, gross margin less than 20%, EBTIDA margin greater than 4%, P/E greater than 30
- Companies in the US information services industry with the following filters: market cap greater than $5B, EBITDA Margin is 20%, Rev Growth (1yr) is more than 5%
Search parameters such as countries, regions, sectors and industries all recognized through natural language, so just type or dictate them in.

Run a quantitative stock screening
Find companies
The Find companies function helps you locate and research individual companies. Our company pages contain all of the company information you'd expect - description, price history, financial statements, valuation metrics, etc.
With the power of AI we're also providing key takeaways from earnings reports, earnings calls, and news. The company evaluation rolls up all of this information in a quick, digestable format. To help save you time and effort, Thematic also compares the company to its two nearest peers and its industry, and provides a valuation summary of overvalued, undervaled, or fairly valued.
Lastly, you can go deep and ask any question you have about the company. Thematic pulls together the information from the company's financials, filings, earnings calls, and news as in-context data for our AI to provide the answers.
